Dokuz Eylul University Hospital, being among the pioneer institutions not only on medical education but also on post-specialist education activities and in surgery, hosted a national live surgery practice carried out by the department of Ear, Nose and Throat  (ENT).

Head of the Department Prof. Dr. Cenk Ecevit and his team performed a surgical practice on two patients as part of sleeping disorder treatment. All across Turkey, close to 400 ENT Physicians found a chance to update information on practicing Expansion Sphincter Pharyngoplasty and Anterior Palatoplasty surgeries by watching it online from beginning to end. In this organized interactive education, which was planned to share knowledge and experience going back many years on a national scale, Prof. Dr. M. Cenk Ecevit answered questions of his colleagues from all across the country. Many feedbacks were given to Prof. Dr. M. Cenk Ecevit, who was simultaneously performing the surgery and giving information about it.

Mentioning the significant contribution of live surgery practices to the process of patient evaluation and decision upon what kind of surgical operation to be applied, Prof. Dr. M. Cenk Ecevit stated:

“In our country, live surgery practices are commonly being done as part of post-specialist training on Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). In these trainings, presentations are given about current subjects that specialists want to learn. We, Dokuz Eylul University Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, have been performing post-specialist education for many years, too. Within this scope, we are organizing cadaver course, seminar, symposium and congress. Until today, we have made substantial contributions to the congresses organized on a national level. We lately carried out our live surgical operation on October 3, 2017 with the contributions of our Rector and Head Physician. We perform surgical operations to some of our patients with sleep disorder as part of their treatments. These surgeries are of considerable interest and to be learned in the field of ENT sicknesses, For many years, we have been carrying out sleep disorder patients’ follow-up diagnosis and treatments in our clinics. We planned and broadcasted the surgeries of our two patients to share acquired knowledge and experiences on a national scale. We provided a connection in such a way that all our colleagues from Turkey could watch and that we could transfer our practices through question and answer in operating theater 5 B and 5 C. We first gave information about patients. Then, we presented theoretical information about patient group that could benefit from these surgeries. We answered the questions coming up synchronously. Approximately 400 colleagues of ours watched the surgery. We care about this kind of comprehensive organizations which contribute to ENT Specialists’ patient evaluation process and enhancement daily practice skills of our colleagues.”
