Dokuz Eylul University Hospital, one of the leading centers of liver transplantation in Turkey, printed out tomography images in 3D format, which enables surgeons to assess preoperative by modelling patients more comfortably. This revolutionary invention was only used in USA and has technically contributed a lot for liver transplants.
Being the postgraduate dissertation of Belma Nalbant from DEU Health Sciences Department of Translational Medicine, this revolutionary invention was a collaborative project of her and her advisors DEU Liver Transplantation Clinic Responsible Manager Prof. Dr. İbrahim Astarcıoğlu, General Surgery Asst. Prof. Tufan Egeli, Ass. Prof. Alper Selver from DEU Faculty of Engineering Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and postgraduate student Ali Emre Kavur.
The software was developed in Turkey and 3D model was printed out by a printer which is only used in USA. The model provides surgeons more detailed information about liver anatomy before the operation, which eventually enables them to adapt more easily to the operation from a different surgical perspective.
